We celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Thursday, August 15th. This is a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses here to fulfill this obligation will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 15th at 7:30am and 7:00pm.

The Catholic Church teaches that the Virgin Mary “having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heaven glory.” This doctrine was defined by Pope Pius XII on 1 November 1950, in the document Munificentissimus Deus. Whether or not Mary experienced a physical death has not been dogmatically defined by the Church. We celebrate the feast of the Assumption of May on August 15 as a holy day of obligation.

The Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church celebrate on the same day the Dormition of the Theotokos (“the falling asleep of the God-bearer’). This Eastern Catholic tradition holds that Mary experienced a natural death, upon which her soul was received by Christ. On the third day after her death, her tomb was found empty. Bishop Kallistos of Diokleia in 1969 wrote in Festal Menaion: “Mary has passed beyond death and judgment, and lives wholly in the Age to Come. The resurrection of the Body ... has in her case been anticipated and is already an accomplished fact. That does not mean, however, that she is dissociated from the rest of humanity and placed in a wholly different category, for we all hope to share one day in that some glory of the Resurrection of the Body which she enjoys even now.”

I thought you might find this interesting.

God Bless! Fr. Joe Bacevice

CATHOLIC CEMETERIES

On October 6th, the month of the Most Holy Rosary, at 1:00pm, the Catholic Cemeteries Association invites families to participate in a half-mile walk while praying the Rosary in honor of departed loved ones. For those who cannot walk, or in case of rain, the Rosary will be prayed in the mausoleum or in the cemetery office. At the end of the Rosary, there is a brief candle lighting ceremony in remembrance of our dearly departed. We are seeking walkers and Rosary Leaders. If you are able to lead the Rosary, contact Rhonda Abrams at rabrams@clecem.org or call 216-930-4866. Register to walk online at: https://conta.cc/2XBXy8K or at a Catholic Cemetery office.

FAITH AND VALUES

Catholic schools make a profound impact on a child’s life. You can help provide more opportunities for students to obtain a Catholic education. Next weekend, a special parish appeal, the Faith and Values Appeal for Education, will be held across the diocese to raise funds to help provide tuition assistance to needy students and their families right here in our diocese. Please be generous in your support of Catholic school students.

FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

The gospel today is clear: entering the Kingdom of God requires us to make it a priority, and to put energy into achieving it. Just going through the motions or expecting God’s favor is not enough. It’s not enough that we know God, rather God must recognize us as His followers, recognize us by how we life the Gospel. What priority and effort are you giving the Gospel in you Christian family?
