One of the most beautiful
places around our nation’s capital is Arlington National
Cemetery, just outside Washington, DC in Arlington,
Virginia. The cemetery itself is meticulously maintained
with rows of Crosses and Stars of David marking the
graves of our servicemen and women and national leaders
buried there. The most solemn place in the cemetery is
the Tomb of the Unknowns. There Company E of the Third
US Infantry Regiment – The Old Guard – keeps a constant
vigil honoring servicemen "known only to God." The
cemetery and the tomb are signs of the respect we show
to those who have lost their lives in service to our
country.
On Monday, the
national holiday of Memorial Day, all of us are called
to honor our war dead, those who gave their lives in
defense of our country and for freedom throughout the
world. As Catholics, the best way to honor our dead is
to pray for them, particularly on Memorial Day.
Our Catholic War
Veterans Post 613 has, since its founding in 1946,
provided a beautiful opportunity for us to gather to
honor our war dead. On Monday beginning at 8:30 am, they
will lead us in a flag raising ceremony, followed by
Mass. Immediately after Mass, they have arranged to
serve breakfast in our hall. They invite everyone in the
Parish to join with them in remembering those who have
died in service to our country and to remember their
members who have died.
I have been a member
of Post 613 since 1980, and have led the Memorial Day
service each year. I invite all of you to join with me
as we remind ourselves through prayer, that the freedom
we enjoy in this country came at a great price, and we
offer our prayers for those who sacrificed their own
lives that we could live in freedom.
God Bless! Fr. Joe
Bacevice
REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS
We ask you to remember the
following who have recently died and were buried from our
parish: Gaynelle Cramer, Ruth Oligny, Frances Schirberl,
Irene Amirault, Mary Ott, and Vincent Riha. May they have
eternal rest in the peace of God’s Kingdom.
2015 MASSES
Beginning
Tuesday, May 27th, we will be accepting Mass
intentions for 2015. Because of the number of requests for
weekend Masses, particularly the
10:00 Mass, we will
accept only two weekend Mass requests per family.
Organizations and individuals who would like to have a Mass
offered on a specific date are asked to schedule them at the
Rectory as soon as possible. We ask that the Mass Offering
accompany the request.
BALTIC COMMEMORATION
On Sunday, June 15th,
we will commemorate the 73rd Anniversary of the
occupation of the Baltic Countries and remember the
deportations of the Baltic people which took place on June
14-15, 1941. The commemoration will take place at the
Latvian Lutheran Church located at corner of Detroit Ave and
Andrews Road in Lakewood, at 2:00pm.
Refreshments will be served afterward. All are invited to
participate. |
OFFICE SUMMER HOURS
Please note that until the
end of September, our Parish Office is closed on
Wednesdays and Saturdays. All other parish functions
continue as usual. For any emergencies, such as for a death or
anointing call, please call the main parish number and then
follow the recorded instructions.
OUR MARCELLA HOUSE NEEDS
A NAME
Now
that we are beginning to move organizations out of the school
building to their new home at 18031 Marcella, we need to give
the house a name. We will have a contest to name the house. The
name should reflect who we are as a parish and the use we are
giving to the house. The name should also be easily adapted to
both English and Lithuanian usage. (Diocesan restrictions do not
allow us to name the house after a person.) The contest is open
to any parishioner. Names may be submitted to Father Bacevice
through mail, e-mail, or placed in the collection basket
on Sunday.
Be sure to include your name and address with your submission.
The prize for the winning name will be a $100 donation to the
parish organization of the winner’s choice, and a $50 prize to
the winner. The Parish Pastoral Council will decide the winning
entry at their September meeting. All entries must be received
by September 1st.
MEMORIAL DAY POPPIES
The
poppy flower has been a symbol of devotion to our war dead at
Memorial Day since the end of World War I. This weekend after
all the Masses, our Catholic War Veterans Post 613 will be
distributing poppies and asking for donations to help support
their programs to assist veterans and their families. Please
wear your poppy this Memorial Day weekend and please offer your
financial support to our Veterans Post so they can continue
their work with veterans, particularly those in our Veterans
Hospital.
SUMMER REMINDERS
Memorial
Day weekend signals the beginning of summer in Cleveland. This
is the time of year that many are involved in outdoor activities
and travel. We wish everyone a safe and relaxing summer, but we
remind everyone to participate at Mass each weekend, even when
traveling. We also remind everyone of their obligation to
support our parish. As we continue to struggle financially, we
need everyone’s support. So on the weekends you are not here for
any reason, I ask you to make up for your missed offerings.
OUR PARISH WEBSITE
We
invite everyone to visit our new and improved parish website:
www.saintcasimirparish.org
Although it is still being developed, we are already posting our
weekly bulletin, our monthly Ministry of Praise
newsletter, our schedule of events, as well as links to various
religious and Lithuanian sites that would be of interest to the
parishioners. In time we hope to have all our parish
organiza-tions have a page on the site. We welcome your comments
and suggestions. We thank Amanda Muliolis for all of her work in
setting up and maintaining the site. |
