SAINT FOR APRIL
ST. FIDELIS OF
SIGMARINGEN
Priest
and Martyr
(1577-1622)

“Woe
to me if I should prove myself but a halfhearted soldier in the service of my
thorn-crowned Captain.”
Fidelis of Sigmari
If a poor man needed some
clothing, Fidelis would often give the man the clothes off his back. Complete
generosity to others characterized this saint’s life.
He was born in 1577 in
Sigmaringen, Prussia. Mark Rey was his baptismal name, Fidelis his religious
name, and his nickname was “the poor man’s lawyer.” He became a lawyer who
constantly upheld the causes of the poor and oppressed people. Fidelis soon grew
disgusted with the corruption and injustice he saw among his colleagues. He
dropped his law career to become a priest, joining his brother George as a
Franciscan friar of the Capuchin order. His wealth was divided between needy
seminarians and the poor. As a follower of Francis, Fidelis continued his
devotion to the weak and needy. Once, during a severe epidemic in a city where
he was a guardian of the friary, Fidelis nursed many sick soldiers.
Fidelis was appointed head of
a group of Capuchins sent to preach against the Calvinists and Zwinglians in
Switzerland. It was a time of political unrest. Those who observed the mission
felt that any success it had was more attributable to the prayer in which
Fidelis spent his nights than to his sermons and instructions. Fidelis’
opponents accused him of being against the peasants’ national aspirations for
independence from Austria. While he was preaching in 1622 at Seewis, to which
he had gone against the advice of his friends, a gun was fired at him, but he
escaped unharmed. A Protestant offered to shelter Fidelis, but he declined,
saying his life was in God’s hands. On the road back, he was set upon by a
group of armed men and killed.
Fidelis’ prayer against
apathy, and his concern for the poor and weak make him a saint whose example is
valuable today. We also are called to share ourselves and our talents with those
less fortunate and to work for justice in the world.

THOUGHTS FROM THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH |
Economic Activity and Social Justice
#2426 The development of
economic activity and growth in production are meant to provide for the needs of
human beings. Economic life is not meant solely to multiply goods produced and
increase profit or power; it is ordered first of all to the service of persons,
of the whole man, and of the entire human community. Economic activity,
conducted according to its own proper methods, is to be exercised within the
limits of the moral order, in keeping with social justice so as to correspond to
God’s plan for man.
#2430
Economic life
brings into play different interests,
often opposed to one another. This explains why the conflicts that characterize
it arise. Efforts should be made to reduce these conflicts by the negotiation
that respects the rights and duties of each social partner: those responsible
for business enterprises, representatives of wage earners (for example, trade
unions) and public authorities when appropriate.
