CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY APPEAL

The Catholic University of America is the national University of the Catholic Church in the United States, located in Washington, DC. It provides an academically rigorous education guided by the Catholic intellectual tradition to nearly 7,000 students every year.

Next weekend, as part of the National Collection for the Catholic University, we will be accepting donations for the University. Your support will enable Catholic University to expand its impact in preparing the next generation of leadership in our Church and nation. Please be generous.

PROTECTION FOR THE UNBORN:

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has declared Monday, January 22, 2018, a National Day of Prayer and Penance for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. The Diocesan Mass for Life will take place on Monday, January 22, at 10:30am at the Cathedral, with The Most Rev. Martin J. Amos, Retired Bishop of Davenport, Iowa, as celebrant. All are invited to participate and pray for an end to abortion.

 CATHOLIC CHARITIES

In a few weeks, we will begin the 2018 Catholic Charities Annual Parish Appeal. This is a reminder to everyone who pledged in 2017 to complete your pledge payments as soon as possible. Letters from the Bishop will be sent to most of you in the coming weeks to invite your support of this year’s appeal. Please be generous.

As I write this column, the weather is above freezing and we are looking at the danger of rivers flooding with the unseasonably warm weather predicted for the next few days. As you read this, we are back in the deep freeze after freezing rain, sleet and snow - typical weather for winter in Cleveland.

For those who braved the cold weather to come to church this weekend, you will find the building much warmer than last weekend. Then we had low gas pressure going into one of the furnaces causing it to shut down. The problem has been fixed and the heat is back to normal.

At this time of year, I want to remind everyone, especially our older members, to be very careful when going outside. The cold can be as dangerous as the heat of summer. Also, ice and snow can make even walking dangerous. A fall on the ice can lead to serious injury to our older members. When the weather is too cold or snowy, please stay warm and safe at home. Remember that God does not expect the impossible from any of us.

I ask our younger members to call or look in on our older members, as this can be a difficult time of year for them. Finally, remember that this time of year is very expensive for us just with the cost of utilities. So I do ask that if you are unable to come to church on a given Sunday, to make up the missed offering. And if you are going to be away for an extended period of time, to please mail in your contribution. Now let’s all pray for an early spring.

God Bless ! Fr. Joe Bacevice

 PLEASE PRAY

Remember in your prayers the soul of Thomas J. Mahovalic who died recently and was buried from our Parish. May he have eternal rest in the peace of God’s kingdom.
