Nature’s capacity to evoke
terror came home to me again
recently. Watching the 2012
movie “The Impossible,” with
its portrayal of the
destructive power of the
tsunami that struck Thailand
in 2004, and its impact on
one family vacationing here,
I was reminded how quickly
our beautiful shelters and
our lives can be shattered
by an event of nature.
Today’s Gospel captures
the fear that a violent
squall could strike in the
hearts of seasoned fishermen
like Peter and Andrew, James
and John. “Teacher, do you
not care that we are
perishing?” they ask Jesus.
Their words express both
faith that he could do
something, and fear that he
would not.
After calming the wind
and the waters, Jesus turns
to them with a question that
runs through Mark’s Gospel
and through history: “Why
are you terrified? Do you
not yet have faith?”
In Mark’s Gospel, the
opposite of faith is not
doubt, but fear. Jesus
stands before us when fear
threatens to overwhelm us,
when storms threaten to
swamp the fragile vessels in
which we place our hopes as
we sail through life. Jesus
asks us: Do you have faith
that I am with you?
God Bless! Fr. Joe Bacevice
REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS

We ask you to remember in your prayers the souls of Alice
Azman, Estera Alsenas, and Virginia Kotnik who died recently
and were buried through our parish. May they have eternal
rest in the peace of God’s Kingdom.
HAPPY FATHERS DAY
We
wish all the fathers and father figures in the parish a
Happy Fathers day. A beautiful blessing of fathers is in the
Rite of Baptism: “God is the giver of all life, human and
divine. May he bless the fathers of these children. They and
their wives will be the first teachers of their children in
the ways of faith. May they also be the best teachers,
bearing witness to the faith by what they say and do, in
Christ Jesus our Lord.”

COLLECTION FOR THE HOLY FATHER
Each
year, we take up the Peter’s Pence Collection in
support of the works of the Holy Father which provide
emergency relief assistance to those throughout the world
who suffer from war, oppression and natural disasters. When
we contribute to this fund, we are actively living the truth
in love and speaking the truth in deeds. As we participate
in this special appeal, we join with more than 1 billion
Catholics in a loving expression of worldwide solidarity.
Please be generous in supporting this appeal next weekend.
FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM
The
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops encourages
Catholics across our country to enter into the period of two
weeks leading up to the Fourth of July (June
21 to July 4), with a strong focus on prayer,
education and reflection on our freedom of religion. There
have been many threats to this First Amendment right over
the history of our country, and it continues today. The
Conference
of
Bishops offers many resources and reflections
about
this freedom and the
threats
against it. These resources can be found through our
diocesan website:
www.dioceseofcleveland.org/freedom
Finally, to conclude the
Fortnight For Freedom, all are invited to participate
at Mass with Bishop Lennon on
Friday, July 4,
at
10:00am at the Cathedral of St. John the
Evangelist.

SUMMER PILGRIMAGES
During
this Year of Consecrated Life we are invited to connect with
religious congregations and to respond to the words of Pope
Francis: “Wake up the World! Be witnesses of a different
way of doing things, of acting, of living! It is possible to
live differently in this world.” To help make this
happen, the Diocese has coordinated a diocesan-wide
pilgrimage to congregational homes and ministry centers of
23 religious communities from June to September. Everyone is
invited to discover the heart of consecrated life and to
discover the beauty of our journey to God, who is the
beginning and the end of life’s pilgrimage.
Posters are in the Book Room and the
side entrance to the Church, and on the bulletin board in
the lower hall with more information. Brochures are also
available near the Church Bulletin racks. Together on this
journey to God, let us pray for each other as we live and
witness our faith in Jesus Christ.
