Each October, all parishes are asked to count attendance at Mass over two
weekends and report the numbers to the diocesan offices. Known as the October
Count, this information is used for reporting the size of our diocese to Rome
and is also used for pastoral planning for the future.
This year we sampled the first and third weekends. We had an average
attendance of 255.5 people. An average of 108.5 at the Lithuanian Mass, and 147
average at the English Masses. Last year, we had an average attendance for all
the Masses of 304, in 2014, the average was 266, in 2013, the average was 316,
in 2012 it was an average of 350, in 2011, the average was 300, and in 2010, the
average was 320.
It is obvious that there is a downward trend here at our parish. Some of
this can be attributed to deaths, but a substantial number of people have just
quit coming to Mass. Since our first year, our attendance has dropped just over
20%. Participation in parish life - fund raisers, cultural events, religious
events, has dropped even more.
I believe it is time for all of us to seriously consider our commitment to
the parish. There is a lot more that we can do as a parish to reach out to our
brothers and sisters who have fallen away from the Church. There are also a lot
more things we can do to inspire each other to participate more fully in parish
life.
As we get smaller, there are fewer people to serve on the pastoral council,
to be a lector at Mass, to serve Mass, to teach religious education, and to help
with the fund raisers needed to raise the money we need to pay our expenses.
I don’t have all the answers for what we can do to improve. Nor am I able
to do all the work alone. So we need to do a better job of sharing ideas and
working together to build up our community. Our Pastoral Council is always ready
to listen to your ideas, and now needs your active participation as we prepare
to elect new members.
You know, working together, we can become a more vibrant community that
will be around for generations to come.

Bless! Fr. Joe Bacevice
