PILGRIMAGE PASSPORT

More than 240,000 Catholics across the eight counties of the Diocese of Cleveland are being mailed “passports” encouraging them to participate in a pilgrimage to the Holy Doors at two locations and to engage in corporal and spiritual works of mercy associated with the Church’s “Year of Mercy.” These passports are also in the Book Room.

Pope Francis has declared this a Jubilee Year of Mercy with the opportunity for the faithful to pass through two Holy Doors within the diocese and receive special blessings. The ritual dates back to the 15th century and teaches that those entering the Holy Doors are crossing the threshold from sin to grace, from darkness to light. The Holy Doors in our diocese are located at St. John Cathedral downtown and at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes on Chardon Rd in Euclid.

Each household in the diocese has been mailed a Jubilee booklet to track their pilgrimage by getting a stamp at either Holy Door location. The faithful are also invited to record corporal and spiritual works of mercy in the booklet. Those who engage in works of mercy at Catholic Charities sites can receive special “Worker of Mercy” stickers for their passports. Parishes and other diocesan institutions also will have the stickers for those who engage in works of mercy at home or other locations.

Bishop Lennon invites all to participate and to heed the words of Pope Francis who said, ”Mercy overcomes every wall, every barrier and leads you to always seek the face of the person. It is mercy which changes the heart and the life.”

BALTIC COMMEMORATION

On Sunday, June 19th, the Baltic American Committee of Cleveland is sponsoring a prayer service to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the occupation of the Baltic States and remember the victims of the mass deportations of June 13-14, 1941. This weekend we welcome Fr. Damian Ezeani, a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Orlu, Nigeria. He is currently on study leave here in Cleveland, doing a Masters Program in Business Administration at John Carroll University and is in residence at Our Lady of Peace Parish in Cleveland.

The Diocese of Orlu is a rural Diocese in the southeastern part of Nigeria. It has a total Catholic population of 1.2 million people. There are 861 students in their seminary. The diocese is served by 5 religious brothers, 119 religious sisters, 396 diocesan priests with 164 parishes and 4 chaplaincies.

The needs of the diocese are great. The diocese built health care centers to provide primary care and needs assistance to make necessary medications available to those who need them. The diocese also drills wells so the people can access to clean drinking water.

The diocese is very young and needs assistance in providing for the seminarians. The clergy, religious and committed laity work daily and with joy caring for the sick, the poor, the aged, displaced children and women, and the needy. Father Damian is here to ask your help in providing for them. Please be generous.

We are taking up a second collection for their needs this weekend and will also accept donations next weekend for this cause. Please be generous.

God Bless! Fr. Joe Bacevice
