Several weeks ago, I received a call from a parishioner about one of our older members being in an assisted living facility for several months and wondering why I have never visited him. I had a simple answer... no one told me that the individual was in the facility. That experience go me wondering... how many of our people are in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and rehabilitation centers that I don’t know about?

One of the most important ministries of the Church is to visit the sick and offer them the consolation of the sacraments. Currently, when I go on my First Friday calls, I visit parishioners in our neighborhood, then in Euclid, and as far as Chardon to the east and then as far as Fairview Park to the west. When I can’t go out on the First Friday of the month because of a funeral or another obligation, I go out on the Second Friday.

When someone is released from the hospital to a facility, I have no way of knowing this as hospitals need to follow strict privacy laws. So if you know of someone who is in an assisted living facility or another long term care facility, have them, or a member of their family, contact me so I can schedule regular visits from either myself of one of our Eucharistic ministers who help me with this ministry.

There are many things I have to do in the parish both administratively and sacramentally. All of these are to help meet your spiritual needs. One of the most important things I do is visit the sick and the infirm. And I can’t do it unless I know who they are and where they live. So if you are confined to a facility our can’t come to Church, let me know.

God Bless ! Fr. Joe Bacevice
